Thailand Hosts Reception to Launch ITLOS Judicial Candidature

On 27 May 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a reception on the occasion of the launch of Thailand’s candidate, Judge Kriangsak Kittichaisaree, for re-election to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the term 2026-2035. H.E. Mr. Chutintorn Gongsakdi, Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed distinguished guests from various diplomatic missions of Member States of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

In his opening remarks, Mr. Gongsakdi emphasized the importance of effective, fair, and sustainable governance and the use of maritime spaces in accordance with international law and for the benefit of all humankind. In this regard, he expressed his utmost confidence for Judge Kittichaisaree who is a distinguished lawyer, diplomat, professor, and scholar of international law. Moreover, throughout his tenure as a judge of ITLOS since 2017, Judge Kittichaisaree has demonstrated independence, integrity, and impartiality in his work.

During the event, Judge Kriangsak Kittichaisaree also shared his vision regarding the role of ITLOS judges, particularly on issues related to climate change, such as sea-level rise and various aspects of maritime governance, including fisheries management. He emphasized his commitment to applying his knowledge and expertise to uphold the rule of law of the sea, including addressing current and emerging challenges for the benefit of present and future generations. The election of judges to ITLOS will be held during the meeting of States Parties to UNCLOS in June 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
